Things to see in Egypt

1: Luxor Temple

Private Tour to East Bank of Luxor
The Facade of Luxor Temple, Luxor, Egypt

This massive temple complex differs from most archaeological offcuts in Luxor in that it was developed as a ceremonial temple for the crowning of Egypt’s kings, rather than being dedicated to a single pharaoh or god. It’s a show-stopper, with an avenue of human-headed sphinxes leading up to the entryway, where you’ll be greeted by two huge sandstone towers with carved hieroglyphs and battle scenes. Inside, there are colossal deity statues, infinite columns and colonnades, and intriguing vestiges of internal structures like chapels. As part of Culture Trip’s immersive 10-day Egypt journey, you may take a candlelit tour of Luxor Temple guided by a local expert.

2: Karnak Temple

Upper Egypt’s

After the Pyramids of Giza, Karnak is Egypt’s second most visited site. It’s easy to see why: it’s unbelievably massive, covering the equivalent of a hamlet. In fact, the term Karnak comes from the Arabic word khurnak, which means fortified settlement. It was earlier connected with the Temple of Luxor by a 2.5 kilometer-long (1.5-mile-long) avenue of sphinx statues, some of which are still standing. It’s also remarkable in that because it was created over nearly two millennia, some of the gods shown in the later sections would have been unfamiliar to people who built the earlier sections.

3: Valley of the Kings

It’s the site of all the legends about underground tombs brimming with treasure, mummies’ curses, and tomb robbers, and it’s without a doubt the most fascinating ancient Egyptian monument. Archaeologists are continuously excavating, exploring, and conserving Tutankhamun’s tomb, which was discovered in the 1920s and is still being excavated, examined, and maintained. It’s a location of scorched desert hills where you’ll feel as if millennia have swallowed you whole as you descend into the cold, impeccably preserved tombs, their ornate reliefs almost as bright as when they were carved and painted. Planning A Trip To Egypt As A First Timer

Is it safe to plan a trip to Egypt?

Yes, Egypt is absolutely safe for tourists and hence it is completely safe to plan a vacation to Egypt. Actually the summer of 2013 was a great time to visit Egypt. There were no demonstrations or troubles and at most a few small attacks. In general, police presence is strong and presence could be seen at various sites all throughout the country. In history, it has always been an easy place to get around without any worries.

Most all areas are filled with massive tour groups so staying away from these popular places will certainly be safer while visiting. While booking a Egypt tour package, people need to know that their own security depends on their behavior too; we weren’t unaware of what was going on – but neither did we allow ourselves to become afraid and run off somewhere else where things seemed safer but more dangerous in reality!

Is there a tipping culture in Egypt?

Before traveling to Egypt for the first time, it’s best to learn about its culture and traditions. You tip for pretty much anything and everything – like getting your bags handled by the porter or even taking a photo while at a historic site!

Do I have to pay for camera fee or photography fee?

It is illegal in Egypt to take photographs of government buildings and military installations. This includes the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Valley of the Kings. Some places also charge certain photography fees in addition to the entry fee. You will need to pay for this amount in return for permission to click pictures.

local street vendors

Can bargaining be done with local street vendors and touts?

Like many countries, Egypt’s cities are inhabited by all kinds of people including street vendors whose sole purpose is to sell their wares to tourists. One of the things that people love about travel is experiencing everything culture has to offer, including its souvenirs, and visitors to Egypt are no exception.

One thing you’ll notice about the Egyptian market places is that bargaining and haggling have become such an intrinsic part of the experience that it can feel nearly impossible not to take part in them!

sick on an Egypt Trip

How to avoid getting sick on an Egypt Trip?

When planning a vacation to Egypt, you need to know that the heat in Egyptian cities can be truly intense.

As a result, dehydration is something you don’t want to take chances with because it can affect so many things – from your physical appearance especially when you’re on vacation, having to deal with an impatient tour guide and having such a good time that you don’t even want to lie down and rest to when you get back home and keep forgetting all the things you wanted to do or needed to do at work.

Dahabeyas are perfect for those looking for an intimate and smooth sail. With no engines on the boat, you get the gift of silence, as the only things you hear is the sound of the Nile waters splashing against the boat, and the serene sounds of nature. And while you’re visiting the pharaohs, why not sail like they used to? Ancient Egyptian tombs display inscriptions of very similar boats that were used by the royals and nobles!

Traditional Dahabiya

Instead of being in a massive floating mass ferried from site to site and completely disconnected from the surroundings of the Nile, an alternative is a traditional sailing boat known as a dahabiya.

A cruise down the Nile on a Dahabiya Nile Cruise is the most exclusive and luxurious way to experience the river. These boats, known as Dahabeyas in Arabic, recall a past era of Egyptian tourism when the elite of Europe used similar vessels to explore the Nile Valley. So, take the classic way to see the Nile and sail into the past. Enjoy a tranquil sailing, explore unique temples and tombs not on your average Nile cruise route, see the  ancient monuments without the crowds, and visit picturesque local villages and idyllic islands.

Dahabiya Nile CruiseDahabiyas feature two large sails, one on the bow and one at the stern.  These boats have no engines just like back in the day and the direction is controlled by roles on pulleys to maneuver a giant wooden rudder.

While tug boats are used to keep the ship moving when winds aren’t favourable, what hasn’t changed is the charm, atmosphere, service, and luxury that the Dahabiya has always been for.

There’s a beautiful open air upper deck with sun loungers, chairs, tables, and a hammock as the ship cruises past riverside villages and ancient site along the Nile.  Below, you have elegantly furnished cabins, a cosy salon with a library that has more books on Ancient Egypt than you’ll be able to go through in one cruise.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Why choose the Dahabiya

A Dahabiya Nile cruise offers the romance of the past with modern comfort and convenience. It’s a leisurely way to get between Luxor and Aswan and brings together superb sightseeing, sailing, delicious traditional meals and attentive personal service. A day on board a traditional Dahabiya has many pleasures.

These some of the few reasons, why you should choose Dahabiya over cruise ship.

  • Spend more time taking in the majesty of the Nile instead of getting lost inside a large cruise ship.
  • Authentic sailing experience aboard a traditional-style ship.
  • Maximum of 12 or less fellow travellers that will never feel crowded and everyone will have their own private space.
  • Dedicated knowledgeable Egyptologist.
  • You won’t be ushered around Ancient Egyptian sites around like Dahabiyayour typical cruise ships where you have to wear wireless headsets or struggle to listen from the back because the group sizes are small.
  • Incredible food cooked by the chef on board that is also completely authentic and local.
  • Since dahabiyas are smaller, they can moor anywhere along the Nile. This opens many more possibilities when it comes to exploring local villages and sites such as Gebel el Silsila which are inaccessible by large cruise ships.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Which Direction Should  I go for our Dahabiya Nile Cruise?

One of the things that really tripped traveler up when they are  planning for Egypt Nile Cruise is what is considered to be “upriver” and “downriver”.  When you look at the map, up intuitively is north and down is south.  Erase that thought because it’s the opposite.  A Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan (going south) is considered to be “upriver” and Aswan to Luxor (going north) is “downriver”.

The direction matters when planning your trip primarily because of logistics but there are a few other things to think about that we will detail below.

Luxor to Aswan

Technically, Luxor’s point of departure is in the neighboring city of Esna. For most operators, going upriver always takes longer because you’re going against the flow of the river. Most Nile cruise is 4 nights and 5 days.

Dahabiya Nile cruise tug boat one advantage of going this direction is that the winds are usually more favorable and blowing south which is why there is a higher chance of using the sails for wind power instead of using the tug boat.

Aswan to Luxor

If you’re thinking of going the other direction, the itinerary for the most part will be the same. Since you’ll also be going with the direction of the river, you’ll be moving a lot faster which is why Nile cruises from Aswan to Luxor are usually fewer days so this is 3 nights and 4 days.

If you want more time on the Dahabiya, think about going from Luxor to Aswan but if it makes sense to start from the south and move your way back up to Cairo, start from Aswan.  There’s honestly no right or wrong way to do it.

Important Note: you can charter your Dahabiya for any number of nights you want.

Meeting Point in Esna

If you start your Nile Cruise from Luxor, most  of the Dahabiyas start from Esna City South of Luxor(one hour drive)

Upon arrival at Luxor Airport, your representative will meet& assist you then you will visit Karnak and Luxor Temple with your guide.after the tour you will transfer to your hootel in Luxor for overnight.

Second day, checking out after breakfast then your tour guide will transfer you to visit the West Bank of Luxor (Valley of the kings,Hatshipsut Temple and Memnon statue)Then Transfer from Luxor to Esna. About 1 hour drive, check in to the Dahabiya Cruise

Some itineraries include visit Esna Temple (aka Temple of Khnum) and the local markets.  You’ll quite enjoy Temple of Khnum for one that’s small, incredibly well-preserved, and distinctively several stories underground from modern-day street level.

TIP:  When preparing your luggage and backpacks in Luxor, make sure you have what you need for your walk around Esna because everything else will be loaded on the Dahabiya.

Important Note: Luxor: If you haven’t been to Luxor before, we suggest you arrive a day early so you can

visit the highlights of this city before checking in to the Dahabiya. Contact Egypt Key Tours for customized tours of Luxor sights, such as the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, the ancient workmen’s village, and Luxor and Karnak Temples.

During your exploration of Esna, the crew will move everything onto the Dahabiya so there’s nothing to worry about once you arrive back at the wharf.

A special touch of hospitality that you love is that almost every time you board the boat, they’ll have a refreshing beverage ready for you.

TIP:  The boarding of the ship will happen pretty quickly so if you’d like to take photos of the boat, make sure you get in front of the group so you can get your shots in since they’ll be waiting for everyone to get together on deck to do initial crew introductions.

You’ll take off your shoes and put everything in a straw basket and at this point you’ll organically say hello to your fellow passengers if you haven’t done that already.

No shoes are allowed on the ship so be prepared to walk bare feet or with socks.  If you’re curious, we didn’t see anyone use slippers or flip flops on board.

Dahabiya boarding process introductions after your Egyptologist does a quick introduction of your Dahabiya, everyone will be lead to the lower deck to the salon/library/dining room where all of your bags have been moved to.  They’ll also tell you what time the group should meet back upstairs for lunch.

Important Note: there was no process for room assignments unless you booked a suite. If you want to choose you have to be the first onboard the Dahabiya.

TIP:  You can ask your Egyptologist for a specific type of room but in all likelihood you’ll need to think ahead of time and be one of the first ones to grab a room.  There’s no real difference between the cabins but if you have a specific preference of twin vs. double bed, act fast!

Once you’ve secured your room and grabbed the key that’s sitting in the keyhole, you’ll go back out to the salon to move your bags in.

Until lunch, you’ll have free time to get settled in and organized.  When ready, everyone will slowly make their way to the top deck to chat with others or find your own corner to chill.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Meals

The food is amazing on the Dahabiya. With your dedicated chef, you’ll be treated with what will seem like an endless amount of food. All of the food cooked is freshly made and authentically Egyptian.  You’ll also be able to try a wide variety of dishes on your cruise.

If you have any dietary restrictions, they have no issues with making something special for you or to tailor the menu to include more of what you’re able to eat.

The dining arrangements on the Dahabiya are family-style which means that everyone will sit around a long table and you’ll share the dishes with the other passengers. There is usually enough food for everyone and even with a long table, all the dishes are accessible because they have the same dishes spread between both ends of the table.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

TIP:  Here are a couple of meal tips that will really help you make the most of your meals

  • There’s no fixed seating around the table despite it initially feeling like you had to sit at the exact same spot on your first meal.  This’ll occur organically but feel free to move around the table meal to meal so you get to talk to everyone or sit closer to the company you enjoy more than others.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for extras of any dishes if they run out.  The chef usually has extras of dishes in the kitchen or can whip it up quickly.  Don’t be shy!
  • Order the drinks you want.  They don’t always come around to take your order so if you’d like to have coffee, a fresh fruit drink, pop, or tea, just ask.
  • You can order drinks outside of meal time and it’s something you definitely take advantage enough of.  Fresh fruit juices are perfect in the afternoon when sailing.
  • Lastly, the timing of these meals will vary to day depending on the day’s itinerary but all of them will be roughly be around these times.  The most variable will be afternoon tea depending on how long the afternoon excursion is.  Sometimes it’ll be before the excursion and sometimes it’ll be after.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

  • Breakfast – 8AM
  • Lunch – 1PM
  • Dinner – 7PM
  • Breakfast

Of all the meals, this one will be the most consistent but will also come with a few surprises.

Every morning, you’ll have bread, jams, yogurt, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, hardboiled eggs, milk, instant coffee, and tea. What changes day to day are the fresh juices that are blended and hot dishes that vary from Egyptian beans, scrambled eggs, omelets, and crepes.

TIP:  If you’d like to have Turkish coffee, make sure to order it.

Lunch

Meal of the day because the weather is great and you’re usually pretty hungry at this point especially if there was a morning excursion.

Dinner

By the time dinner comes around, the sun will have set, the ship’s power generators will be on, and the temperatures will have dropped as well.Dinner will always start with hot soup and from there you’ll have the chef’s selection of dishes that will consist of Egyptian tajin (stew/casserole in clay pot), salad, rice, pita, meat dish.  You’ll finish with a pastry dessert.

TIP:  While certainly not mandatory, we noticed that most passengers wore nicer clothes at dinner.  There’s no requirement for this but this is a good chance to wear fresh clothes, long sleeves to stay warm, and stay classy.

Alcohol

Up until this point, everything is included in the price of your Nile cruise.  The only thing that isn’t included is alcoholic beverages.  There are bottles of wine on board that you can add to your tab.  For those looking for beer, they also cans available including the Egyptian beer, Stella.

The alcohol tab is taken care of on the last night of the cruise.

What’s On The Top Deck

The upper deck of a traditional Dahabiya. What you’ll love about it is that it’s broken up into distinct zones and areas to hang out and have conversation.

Dahabiya Nile Cruise

Dining table – This is a long rectangular table with wooden chairs and soft seat covers where you’ll have all your meals but you can also use it to chat and set up the laptop if you need to.

Beach chairs – sun loungers that you can pull in and out of the shade as needed.  Fresh towels are provided every day and you can raise and lower the headrest angle.

Chairs and coffee table – wooden chairs, love seat, and coffee table that is almost straight out of an Egyptian family’s home.

Sit down and sprawl zone – A large circular coffee table on a rug is surrounded by giant cushions and is a great place to lie down and chill.

Hammock – This is a hammock for 1 but surprisingly comfortable and perfect for a nap.

Rear living room chairs and couch –  most of the Dahabiyas  has  chairs and couch surrounding a coffee table that’s a bit more comfortable than the other zone with the coffee table.

Rudder control carpet – When nobody’s manning the rudder, you can sprawl out on the rug.

Chess board table – There’s a chess board on a table here alongside a few other card games if anyone’s up for a match.

The top deck is yours to explore and find your own favourite nook.  Since there are only a few passengers on board, it never felt crammed since half of the group preferred to rest in their cabins.

How Your Day will Go

Life on board a Dahabiya Nile cruise is peaceful and idyllic.A day on board a traditional Dahabiya has many pleasures. You can lie in a deck chair, read a book or watch children playing and women doing their washing. Every day there is a chance to walk around villages, visit local markets or explore monuments along the Nile. Meals are freshly prepared on board and served on the sundeck, in the dining room or on a beautiful spot on the banks of the Nile. There’s nothing better than an evening dining under a twinkling night sky by the light of a campfire. You are far away from the fancy-dress parties of the large cruisers. You’ll find no flashing disco’s here, but it might be possible to attend a show by local musicians under the stars.

Power

At the end of the day, the Dahabiya is a traditional sail boat and to keep it as authentic as possible and inadvertently also make it an experience where travellers can stay in-the-moment instead of being on their devices all the time.

This is why there is no power on the boat except for mornings and evenings.  This is something that might be a surprise to some that don’t read the details but is definitely a big deal for you to be aware of.

The general time that power is on is 7AM-8:30AM and 6PM-10:30PM.

In addition to all the good reasons for not having constant power, the other reason is that diesel generators are loud and they would ruin the ambiance of the Dahabiya.

From experience, this works perfectly fine but you definitely want to do a few small things to make your life easier:

  • Have depleted batteries and chargers already plugged in so that when the power kicks on, you’ll be charging right away.
  • Bring powerbanks for your phones and other USB-powered devices.
  • Laptops are great for charging during non-generator hours so you can leave USB-powered devices plugged in the cabin to charge while you’re away during the day.

TIP: If you have a lot of electronic devices that need charging, make sure you bring enough European plug adapters and chargers.

There are 2 at least outlets in the cabin but if you want to keep things centralized, bring a portable power bar.

Connectivity

As much as you’ll want to stay disconnected during your trip, you’ll inevitably succumb to wanting to share photos on social media, chat with friends and family, begrudgingly check your email, or check the score for your favourite team.  Here’s how you can do it aboard the Dahabiya.

Wifi

Some Dahabiyas offer free wifi however the quality of the wifi varies quite considerably and it has to do with where you are along the Nile and where you are within the ship.

The wifi is provided by a hotspot that everyone connects to.  Your Egyptologist will plug it in when there is power on the boat and most of the time he has it on the top deck which is why you get the best signal up there.  The signal drops to close to nil once you get to your cabin which does get frustrating so if you need wifi, you’ll have to camp out upstairs to use it.

Expect the signal to be generally good enough to check your e-mails, use social media, and browse basic pages but if you want to do any streaming or download large files, you might be out of luck.

TIP: Camp out on the top deck after power has gone off to get the best speeds for wifi because everyone else will be sleeping if you have data-critical needs.

ANOTHER TIP: Sometimes you won’t get signal on the boat but that’s because the hotspot device has run out of power.  It doesn’t hurt to ask your guide to check on it to make sure it’s still on.

 Cellular Signal

Another way to get access to data is through your phone’s SIM or your very own hotspot device.  The type of signal you’ll get throughout the Nile will be 3G or 4G and 1 to 3 bars at most.  It will constantly fluctuate along the Nile as you get closer and farther away from towns with cell towers so don’t expect this to be the most reliable but at least you won’t be limited to the range and congestion of the shared wifi hotspot on the boat.

Local SIM cards are quite affordable and you can do this once you arrive in Cairo.

What if I’m a Group of 3?

Travelling in groups of 3 is always not easy one and so a common question is whether you can squeeze 3 people in a cabin or suite. If you’re three adults however, you’ll be out of luck and you’ll have to book two cabins.

What if I’m travelling solo?

All Dahabiyas of standard rates for cabins are for double occupancy.  Solo occupancy rates are going to be higher and this is par for the course in the industry.  The prices aren’t quite double but it is a significant hike.

Do children under 12 get a discount?

This policy does vary between companies but generally, kids aged 1 to 4 are free if they’re sharing a cabin with the adults.

Here is our child policy regarding the Nile Cruise tours:-

1)    Children under 4 years are exempted and are free of charges that are “Sharing Parents room”.

2)    Children under 6 years: will be charged 25% of the total cost of the adult.

3)    Children from 6 to 11 years: will be charged 50% from adult price.

Anyway, for better understanding please contact travel agent.

Tipping Guideline

When it comes to tipping, your Nile cruise operator or your tour guide will most likely give you guidelines before or at the start of the trip.  If you can, try to get the guidelines before you leave so that you can better plan how much of each currency you need.

In Egypt, tipping is almost preferred in USD but EUR or GBP are welcome.  That doesn’t mean local currency isn’t wanted but the theory is that they make more money on foreign currency.

Aswan a must-see tourist destination in Egypt, Famous for beautiful scenery along the Nile and the Nubian Culture that still a strong influence in southern Egypt. Its quarries provided the granite used so many sculptures and obelisks.

Egypt

Exploring Aswan

Take a traditional Felucca to Kitchener’s Island (Botanical Gardens) and spend a peaceful afternoon there. After, sail down the Nile to the ancient island of Philae where the magnificent Temple of Philae is sure to enthrall.

When back in downtown, walk to see the Unfinished Obelisk, which would have been the largest if completed. Then visit the nearby Nubian Museum.

Start another day by visiting the breathtaking colossal landmarks of the Abu-Simbel Temples; there is an enchanting sound and light show at night there. Don’t forget to take a stroll in Aswan’s souq (market) where little colorful shops sell almost everything. The Roman structure of the Kalabsha Temple in Nubia and the Tombs of the Nobles on the west bank of the Nile are not to miss.

About Aswan

Located about 899 km south from Cairo, Aswan is a serene Nile Valley destination where the Nile is more majestic than anywhere else, flowing through granite rocks, and round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants.

It is considered as an all-time favorite winter destination. Moreover, you’ll be surprised to see how many monuments and sites this small city has to offer. Consider sailing to the temple of Philae, seeing the Agha Khan Mausoleum and taking an excursion to St. Simeon Monastery. Egypt’s sunniest southern city is the perfect destination to stroll and relax in a magical cultural setting: wander down the broad walkway, locally known as the corniche, to watch feluccas slowly sailing the Nile then stop at one of the floating restaurants to enjoy Nubian music and freshly caught fish.

Aswan offers a splendid view of the Nile and is a great starting point for a Nile cruise. Aswan also offers a rich cultural experience; you will get to know Nubian culture and shop for spices, henna tattoos, souvenirs and African handmade goods at the Aswan souk. The word Aswan derives in fact from the Ancient Egyptian word Soun meaning souk or trade. It has earned its name thanks to the city strategic position, on the trade route linking the North of Egypt to its South. Since Ancient times, Aswan has also been known for its environmental therapy: burying the aching parts of your body in Aswan sand gives valuable results and can help relieving you from stubborn ailments such as rheumatism, arthritis, joint edema and skin inflammation. The town climate is also known to have great relaxing and rejuvenating properties.

Philae Temple (Also Called Isis Temple)

Egypt

If you do one thing in Aswan, it should be to visit the beautiful Philae Temple. This beautiful temple complex is one of the most picturesque in all of Egypt. It sits on Aglika Island just south of the old Aswan Dam and you must ride a water taxi to the island to get to the ruins. The temple was moved to its current location following the construction of the High Dam, which threatened to submerge it permanently.

The careful reconstruction at the current site carefully completed, painstakingly preserving the original appearance and layout of the complex and even landscaping the island to match its former location. Dedicated to the goddess Isis, The temple has several shrines and sanctuaries such as Trajan Kiosk or Pharaoh’s Bed. Philae Temple or Isis temple is one of the best-preserved Ptolemaic temples in Egypt.

 The Unfinished Obelisk

Egypt

The Unfinished Obelisk is a rare opportunity to consider what this process might have been like and just how difficult it was to shape and carve the great stone blocks that make up Egypt’s many monuments.

This huge obelisk would have stood 140 feet in height, the largest even in Egypt. It was to be carved from the Red Aswan granite that decorate many of Egypt’s greatest monument and for which the city is famous. This greatest of all of Egypt’s monoliths, however, was never finished. At a late stage in its formation, a flaw in the rock was discovered and it was abandoned.

As a result, it remains in one of Aswan’s ancient quarries, fully formed and carved on three sides, but still anchored to the bedrock on the fourth. Archeologists believe that this obelisk was intended for karank, but instead it has remained in the quarry, a curious testament to the difficulties of carving in stone, for the last several thousand years.

Cost: 80 EGP per adult, 40 EGP per student (valid ID)

Felucca Ride On The Nile River

Egypt

This one of the best thing to do in Aswan, especially at the sunset, is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two in Aswan. Sofitel Old Cataract Hotel

Egypt

The Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Hotel, also known as the Old Cataract Hotel, is one of the finest and most famous historical and luxury hotels, built in the late 19th (1899) century atop a granite hill at the Nile River edge in Aswan, Egypt.Agatha Christie wrote her famous novel Death on the Nile while staying here; part of the movie was filmed at the hotel.

This is on the top of list and the best place to stay in Aswan.

We highly recommend The Terrace Restaurant in the hotel for great lunch or dinner or just a drink, the food and the drinks are wonderful and the views over the Nile River are even better.

Egypt

Important Note: To get table with a view of the Nile, make your reservation in advance, even for lunch or drink

Prepare yourself for a particularly overwhelming sightseeing experience: the Aswan High Dam is truly impressive. The Dam is 3600 meters long, 980 meters thick at base and 111 meters tall (at its highest point). The waters of Lake Nasser, the world’s largest man-made lake, have amassed behind it. It provides irrigation water and electricity for the whole of Egypt and Located 13 km south of Aswan.

The Dam was constructed in 1960s. Egyptian leader Nasser wanted to build the dam in order to end the flooding of the Nile River and to bring more electric power to Egypt.

Nubian Museum

Egypt

The Nubia Museum in Aswan houses finds made during excavations carried out as part of UNESCO’s International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, threatened by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. Besides showcasing many of the more than 3,000 objects found during the excavations, the Museum serves as a focal point for Nubian history and culture, its collections presenting the history of Nubia from prehistory to the present day.

Qubber El-Hawa (Tombs Of Nobels)

Egypt

The rivers cape of Aswan is dominated by the sand-covered hills of the West Bank which is strewn with rock-cut tombs of high-status officials of the Old and Middle Kingdom. At the crest of the hill is the domed tomb of a Muslim prophet which gives the hill its local name, Qubbet el-Hawa or ‘Dome of the Winds. The illuminated view of the northern hills of the west bank of the Nile is a truly magical one, not to be missed. From Aswan, you’ll have front row seats to witness this particularly beautiful and inspiring panorama.

The tombs belong monarchs (governors), keepers of the gate of the south and other dignitaries of ancient Elephantine. Six of them are open to the public.

Egypt

 Tombs of Mekhu & Sabni (NO 25 & 26)

The adjoining tombs of the father and son Makhu (Tomb No 25) and Sabni (Tomb No 26)

Both overseers of Upper Egypt, date from the extraordinarily long reign of the 6 th dynasty pharaoh Pepi II (2278-2184 BC).

Tomb of Sarenpt II (NO 31)

The largest and finest tomb of Qubbit el- Hawa .Sarenput was the local governor and commander of the frontier garrison of the south under the 12 th dynasty pharaoh Amenmemhat II (1922-1878 BC)

Tomb of Harkhuf (NO 34)

A governor of the south under Pep II.

Tomb of Hekaib ( pepinakht No 35)

Hekaib also known as Pepinakht, was the overseer of foreign soldiers during the reign of Pepi II.

Tomb of Sarenput I (No 36)

Sernput I was the grandfather of Sarenput II and was a regional governor during the 12 th dynasty.

Elephantine Island

Egypt
Elephantine Island’s southern end comprises the site of ancient Abu. Its name meant both ‘elephant’ and ‘ivory’ in ancient Egyptian, a reminder of the important role the island once played in the ivory trade. The island’s Nubian villages of Siou and Koti make a surprising counterpoint to the bustle of the city across the water.

The island lies opposite central Aswan, just north of the First Cataract. A recent building boom has changed its nature, but it remains calm and essentially rural.

Egypt

Located within view of the High Dam, Kalabsha Temple is often the first stop for any cruise on Lake Nasser. It was moved to this spot from its originally location 30 miles to the south after the construction of the dam.

Construction of the temple was begun at the end of the Ptolomaic Dynasty and actually completed under the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus. The result is an interesting combination of imagery that includes Egyptian and Roman themes with images of Roman emperors and pharaohs worshipping with the Egyptian gods. The temple was dedicated to the Nubian god Mandulis. It has a large pylon, which is connected to the rest of the complex by a wall, creating a closed space. There are stairs to the roof, offering a great view of the lake and back up to the High Dam.

The symmetry of the temple layout is a tribute to the mythical link the two gods shared. Built on an outcrop at a bend in the Nile where crocodiles used to gather in ancient times, the temple is a testament to the importance Ancient Egyptian priests placed in the natural cycles and crocodiles of the Nile. Visit the temple to see mummified crocodiles, clay coffins and spectacular reliefs on the walls.

Egypt

Temple of Horus, is considered to be one of the most beautiful and preserved Temples in Egypt.

Karank Temple Complex

Egypt

The Karnak Temple complex is certainly one of the top tourist attractions in Luxor you really cannot miss. It’s so huge, it truly beggars comprehension. It also happens to be one of the most important temples in ancient Egypt.

If that isn’t enough reason to visit, then the gigantic Hypostyle Hall with its forest of ancient columns should convince you. I’m sure you’ve seen pictures on social media already – and yes, it does live up to the hype!

Egypt

More than a temple is spectacular complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, Pylons, and obelisks dedicated to the Theban Gods and the greater glory of the pharaohs. Everything here is on a gigantic scale.

The Karnak Temple Complex is home to three main temples, several smaller enclosed temples, and a number of outer temples – combining the achievements of many generations of ancient builders over a period of 1500 years. Around thirty different pharaohs contributed to the building process of this site, enabling it to reach a size, complexity and diversity not seen elsewhere. It was after all the New Kingdom’s most sacred site.

Note: There is a sound & light show almost every night.

Luxor Temple

Egypt

Largely built by the New Kingdom Pharaoh Amenhotep III , the Luxor Temple is a strikingly graceful piece of architecture built on the banks of the Nile.

The grand temple in Luxor sometimes called the “southern sanctuary”, is a must visit while you are in town. It’s not consecrated to a single goddess or cult but is rather dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship and the royal Ka.

In ancient times, two majestic obelisks were standing in front of it. Only one remains. You’ll find the other on the Place de la Concorde in Paris.Once a year, a big festival was held, that saw a huge procession from Karnak to Luxor. An avenue lined with hundreds upon hundreds of sphinxes connected the two sites.

Note: Make sure to drop by in the evening, when lights illuminate the temple. Seriously one of the best things to do in Luxor at night!

 Luxor Museum

Egypt

About halfway between the Luxor and Karank Temples. This wonderful museum has a well-chosen and brilliantly displayed and explained collection of antiquities dating from the end of the Old Kingdom, mostly gathered from the Theban temples and necropolis.

One of the best places to visit in Luxor is definitely the Luxor Museum. In fact, the wonderful museum is only rivaled by the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The collection is just so stunning! Especially take note of the 26 outstanding New Kingdome statues in the basement.

 Mummification Museum

Egypt

This is a small, somewhat interesting museum about the mummification process. Not only can you see mummified people but there are also mummified cats, birds, and crocodiles.

https://www.egyptkeytours.com/tours/tour-to-luxor-museum-and-mummification-museum/

 West Bank Of Luxor

The West Bank of Luxor in Egypt is even more of an archaeological paradise than the East Bank. The area along the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor contains some of the most important archaeological sites in the world.

What to Bring

You need to bring a torch (flashlight) and, more importantly, plenty of water. Also   bring plenty of small changes for Baksheesh (Tip. Tomb and temple guards rely on tips to augment their pathetic salaries. 10 to 20 EGP will be enough for them to either leave you in peace, or to open  a door or reflect  light on a particularly beautiful painting.

West Bank offers all the following attractions and more:

  • Valley of the Kings
  • Valley of the Queens
  • The Colossi of Memnon
  • Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir El-Bahari)
  • Medinet Habu  ( Ramses  III Temple)
  • Assasif Tombs
  • Ramesseum (Ramses II Temple)
  • Tombs of the Nobles
  • Deir al-Medina (Valley of the Workers)

Valley Of The Kings

Egypt

The Valley of Kings is the ancient burial ground of many of Egypt’s New Kingdom rulers. A truly impressive site! There, you will find Tutankhamen tomb which was discovered almost intact in 1922. Valley Of The Queens

Egypt

The Valley of the Queens is the place where wives of Pharaohs were buried in ancient times as well as princes, princesses and various members of the nobility.

Important Note: the Tomb that you will see here is smaller and lacks some of the grandeur of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings with one big exception the tomb of queen Nefertari.

Tomb of queen Nefertari’s Ramses II favorite wife is the most famous attraction. The tomb is said to be one of the most beautiful and Spectacular in Egypt.

The level of the detail is amazing and the color are more vibrant that what you can see any tomb in Egypt. Don’t miss it, but it on your list.

Mortuary Temple Of Queen Hatshepsuit

Egypt

Word’s cannot describe the beauty of the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut on the West bank of the Nile. It is one of the most beautiful sights in Egypt, and certainly in Luxor.

Hatshepsut gained fame as one of the few female Pharaohs in the long history of the ancient Egyptian kingdom. Definitely make sure to have a closer look at the many murals throughout the temple, where her famous expedition to the African kingdom of Punt is displayed.

Colossi Of Memnon

Egypt

On your way to visit the Valley of the Kings, you will come across the two gigantic statues known as the Colossi of Memnon. These two gigantic figures of Amenhotep III were originally situated in front of his Mortuary temple, which seems to have been destroyed for unknown reasons. Each colossus is about 21 meters tall and represents King Amenhotep III seated on his throne. Legend has it that after an earthquake damaged it in 27 BC, one of the statues emitted strange sounds in the morning-perhaps due to the heat of the sun following the humidity of the night. However, the restoration which took place in 193-211 A.D, made the sound stop forever!

Mortuary Temple Of Ramsses Iii At Medinet Habu

Egypt

One very impressive mortuary temple that should definitely be on your list of things to do in Luxor, is Medinet Habu. The important New Kingdome period temple of Rameses III has some impressive murals of the battle prowess of the pharaoh.

Walk through the remnants of the workers’ mud brick houses at the rear of the site, and then into the grandness of the temples. Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III oversaw the building of the original temple of Amun which was later walled in to the complex by Ramses III. The entrance to this temple complex is through the singular Syrian Gate, this large building is particular to Madinat Habu and is carved with giant images of the Ramses III defeating the Libyans.

Deir El-Medina (Valley Of The Artisans)

Egypt

This is the place where the workmen of the royal tombs used to live. Here you will see the Temple of Deir el-Medina, which was dedicated to the goddess Hathor. This is the only temple in all of Egypt where you can admire carvings of the Final Judgment.

Tomb Of The Nobels

Egypt
The Valley of The Nobles is located on the west bank of Luxor in an area called Sheik Abd El-Korna. The site has rock-cut tombs of nobles and high officials of ancient Egypt. These men once served the Pharaohs during the time of the New Kingdom. (1500 – 500 B.C.)

There are numerous tombs to visit, One of the most important tombs in this cemetery is tomb 55, which belonged to Ra-Mose. He was the mayor of Thebes during the end of the reign of Amenhotep III (Amenophis III) and his son Akhenaton, the vizier. Unfortunately, this tomb is unfinished because Ra-Mose moved, with Akhenaton, to the new capital Akht-Aton (modern-day Tell El-Amarna), therefore the decoration work stopped, and the tomb was left unfinished, except for the scenes which already had been completed. Also we recommend the tombs of Sennofer and Rekhmire since these are two of the best tombs to visit.

 Ramesseum

Egypt

The mortuary temple of Ramses II took around 20 years to build as a part of his funerary complex. The magnificent temple is on Luxor’s West Bank and in its day the Ramesseum was similar to Abu Simbel in grandeur and Medinet Habu in architecture. Ironically the Nile floods deteriorated the temple in which Ramses is portrayed as an eternal deity. Make sure to notice the images of the Battle of Qadesh in which the pharaoh is shown firing his arrows at the retreating enemy. The colossal statues of Ramses which once stood tall at the entrance are now in ruins but you can still see parts scattered around the temple.

Felucca Ride To Banana Island

If you’ve had your fill of temples and tombs for the day, there is no better way to relax in Luxor than to take a felucca ride to Banana Island. Five kilometers upriver from Luxor, this teeny palm-shaded island is the perfect chilled-out contrast to the history-filled treasures of the West and East Bank. Hop on a felucca in the late afternoon after a long day of temple and tomb viewing, and sit back to watch the Nile-side views as the boat captain raises the sail and you slide up the river. If you sail back just on sunset, you’ll get to see the river at its most majestic.

One of the best things to do in Luxor in the late afternoon or early evening is to relax aboard a felucca.
